Sometimes it can be hard to find a little bit of joy in the day-to-day dance of life. Balancing bills, internal battles, family, and friendships. And the overwhelming onslaught of staying aware, feeling connected – mostly in a surface swim atop the social media wave. A selfie or an online rant, an opinion, or an overshare. Telling the world, this is me. Deal with it. I don’t know about you, but I am still trying to deal with the real me. The 3 AM, why am I still awake, me. And five minutes later, 6 AM hits and it’s time to get up and fight the compulsion to see the world imploding. Before we paint our teeth in paste and smile.
Anyway, what was I saying? Oh right, joy. It’s not just about finding it, it is recognizing when you have it and knowing how to hold on. My Mum always told me I never take the time for the moments of accomplishments, achievements – celebrate the wins, no matter if it is in work, or personal. So today, I am celebrating:
DEFIANT IS AN NAACP IMAGE AWARD NOMINEE
I am so grateful for the creative team behind this effort. I will start with my unsung Stranger heroes.
Darrell May laid out the entire book (as he always does). This was a Herculean effort, and a huge responsibility to honor the legacy of Robert Smalls – a true hero. He created something truly cinematic and powerful. Next up is Joshua Cozine, who made sure the book was true. His skills ranged from editorial to production design and lettering – to coordinating the business of printing and distributing – all of it. He is the glue of Stranger Comics. I also want to shout out to Quincy Everidge for being the best product manager! Of course I want to thank Rob Edwards, our esteemed writer who was such a joy to work with, and all our incredible artists for lending their immense talents. You know who they are because I am suuuure you have got the book right? Pencilers Sean Hill, Alex Paterson; colorists Blond, Mauro Salgado; cover artists Nikolas Draper-Ivey, Caanan White, and Ray Height, you are all spectacular. The hard work is so sincerely appreciated. And to all the good folks at Legion M, and your mighty community, we appreciate you trusting us with this legacy project. I am so happy your faith in our work has been recognized.
PLEASE KEEP SPREADING THE WORD: For Defiant and all of Stranger Comics' titles, Niobe, I Am Kids books, etc… at your local bookstore, comic shop, library and school, and please leave a review on Amazon. The timing couldn’t be more serious given what is going on in our world.
