A vampire’s thirst for silver

There was nothing soft about the clouds that night. They hung as jagged bones spearing through an onyx sea. Stars and other worlds hid behind the skeletal sky; they knew not to glitter. Far below, the forest fell away down a mountainside in pillars of black pine, and the wind that climbed it carried the whisper of winter. The moon dragon's scales were blacker than ink. Magga's crescent eye was not seen, yet I felt her watching from beyond the peaks as I held one of her Silver Elf offspring in my hands—paler than the snow that crusted the high branches, and colder to the touch. The Morkai's death would be one more reason for Magga to hate me. Worse, if I seduced this one. Made her mine, as I had once bedded her favorite follower, Salem Ravensong. I had made the Raven love me as I craved him.

My thirst was greater than a dragon God's hunger.
